The Encroaching World

The Encroaching World

The world does seem to encroach,

Upon our hearts each day.

And flesh will the welcome mat

Before it always lay!

It steals our thoughts away from God.

It takes our spirit to its gaze.

It makes a constant warfare,

With it’s pulls and sways.

Even times in midst of worship,

It seeks to gain control!

And holy thoughts on sacred paths,

Are shaken from their hold.

The mind of Christ I seek to have,

But cannot seem to grasp,

For even the Holy Spirit’s visits

Unto my heart won’t last!

Much grief this brings within,

Much wetness of the eyes,

Much yearnings unfulfilled,

Much longings unsatisfied!

And all this time in private pain,

I cannot deny the call

From other wounded, broken hearts

To raise them from their falls.

Them I attend with weeping heart,

But with smiles upon my face,

My wounded heart extends a hand,

By naught but sovereign grace!

Then I return to prayer’s relief,

To tell Christ of all I bear,

With nail pierced hand I’m made to see -

He’s given me all my care!
